Spanish police: Terror cell was planning more attacks

This comes after several terror attacks which have involved the use of vehicles like cars, lorries and vans.

Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Mark Rowley said in a statement that British authorities were "liaising closely with the Spanish authorities and await further updates regarding the nationalities of the deceased and injured". Police believe the property was used to plan the attacks, and that the accidental explosion prevented a far deadlier attack, according to the Associated Press.

It said its fighters "ran over several Crusaders with a truck in the coastal town of Cambrils".

The five attackers died from a shootout with police.

A manhunt is underway in Spain for the driver of a van that ploughed into tourists on Barcelona's iconic Las Ramblas thoroughfare Thursday.

Hours after Thursday's attack in Barcelona there was a similar assault in the seaside town of Cambrils that left one woman dead.

Younes Abouyaaqoub, one of the suspects. One person dies. Police chief Josep Lluis Trapero said it appeared the residents at the house had been "preparing an explosive device".

An Edmonton man travelling in Spain said it's "pure luck" his family wasn't caught in a deadly van attack on Barcelona's Las Ramblas Thursday. He had not seen Es Satty since July. "We were shutting down the blinds but people kept coming in and we had to keep it open so they could enter the shop". "But you feel bad", he said.

"I have lived more years here than in my (own) country". They said some of the ones that they knew - some of the terror - terrorists were very pleasant, well-integrated, polite guys. "I can't understand it", she said.

Police believe the cell members had planned to fill the vans with explosives and create a massive attack in the Catalan capital. He was desperately loved by us all and will be dearly missed. His mother made an emotional plea on Spanish television urging her son to turn himself in: "I prefer him going to jail before him dying". Spain is one of the world's top three vacation destinations, with Barcelona its most popular destination - welcoming about 8 million international visitors a year.

Of the five attackers, two have been identified as Said Aallaa, 18, and Mohamed Hychami, 24.

"We are working in that line", Trapero said.

Later Sunday, nearly 100,000 people are expected at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium for FC Barcelona's first game of the season, which will be marked by a minute of silence for the victims.
