Wenger confirms Lacazette debut in Sydney

First appearances can be deceptive.

Arsenal, even after winning the FA Cup title for a third time in four years, had a disappointing season in 2016-17, with the North London side, predictably, tailing off as the winter months hit and then making the inevitable Champions League exit, following a heavy defeat to Bayern Munich, 10-2 on aggregate.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly taken a dig at Arsene Wenger's decision to sign France striker Alexandre Lacazette. Adding creedance to that is the fact that he is on their preseason tour, unlike Kieran Gibbs, who is in a similar boat.

Admittedly, preseason is not quite that.

The 26-year-old's protracted transfer from home-town club Lyon was finally confirmed late on Wednesday afternoon. And Wenger's need has been extreme to the point of desperate.

The club will also tour China after their visit to Australia. The supporters of his boyhood club will remember the spectacular ones, and there were a number of those, but each was marked by a particular brand of precision and ruthlessness.

"I have always said that you'll only know what he has achieved for Arsenal when he leaves", he explained. Highlights are too ubiquitous on YouTube and social media for that.

"That's all speculation at the moment, there is nothing really concrete about any signing", he said.

Fellow Yellow Canaries target Lucas Perez has however, been left out of the travelling squad and could be headed for an exit.

Arnold's Sydney FC are first to face the Gunners at ANZ Stadium on Thursday night (July 13) before another full house is expected on Saturday (July 15) for the Wanderers-Arsenal encounter. His first steps into life as an Arsenal player in Australia will make for required viewing.

The 28-year-old revealed that he is looking forward to playing alongside Lacazette next season. "It will be difficult games".

Since 2000, nine different players have worn the No. 9 at the club and none of them have been able to keep a hold of it for more than three seasons.
